New Drop-In Center!

Happy New Year from Awaken

Awaken has had an incredible year! On top of the $3,500 in presents that went to 20 women and 10 children for Christmas we are also moved into the Awaken Drop-in Center! Reno Christian Fellowship and its church family made a $50,000 contribution as part of its two-year JUMP initiative to allow us the startup funds to open the Drop-in Center. We are in a soft opening right now, but hope to soon be fully staffed and have our hours of operations up and running!

The statistics are scary for Reno in regard to the young women and youth in this community involved in prostitution and human trafficking. For the majority that want to escape, it’s a challenging path. We are opening the drop-in center in downtown Reno because we believe being downtown, where the heart of the exploitation takes place, will allow us to have the greatest impact. The center will be a place where girls can escape what is happening to them, become a part of a healthy community that loves them well.

Last night we hosted our first exercise class and tonight we will ring in the new year with dinner and games!

Merry Christmas from everyone at Awaken!

Awaken has had an incredible year and a wonderful Christmas season with our staff and the women and children we serve. This year our team of mentors and staff opened up their homes to the girls and together we made gingerbread houses, decorated cookies, opened presents and shared meals. We have some of the most generous people investing in these girls and their families. This year churches and community members donated over $3,500 in presents that went to 20 women and 10 children!

All of the girls we serve were so blessed by your kindness! Jen and I received a text last night saying, “I’m overwhelmed by the generosity tonight. I feel like I was on the Oprah Christmas Special!”

We wish we could show you all of their beautiful faces. The girls really wanted to show you how much fun we had at this year’s Christmas events!

Giving Tuesday

Know what you’re giving to on this Giving Tuesday!

The banquet was a huge success this year. We had an astounding 650 amazing people in attendance and raised over $100,000! This is a great start to the things God has for us.  In 2015, Awaken had the opportunity to work with 25 new women and children as well as 55 returning girls.  Two young women received their GEDs and one is currently in classes to complete hers. We have three young ladies enrolled in university courses, one spent a summer term in China, one got engaged and another celebrated her one year wedding anniversary and birth of her second child. The stories like this continue on and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the efforts these young women have made toward their futures. As a result of this community truly mobilizing together to show the provisions of God’s plans for them, they now have a future they can see with eyes of hope that leads to freedom.

Over the next two years with your continued help, we will be expanding our services, developing a new treatment model and adding to our housing opportunities. Next year, Awaken will be opening a drop-in center, adding on additional housing and (with a lot of prayer) starting a John School to help bring restoration to the buyers of sex.  In order to do this, we will be raising $1,000,000 over the next two years to go towards these opportunities.

Awaken is blessed to be expanding in opportunities to house these young women. This is always an area that has needed development and over the next two years, we are committed to seeing more Awaken housing opportunities happen for these young women. We invite you to help us reach our goals of obtaining a safe house, transitional housing and emergency housing for these women.

Research shows that taking healthy risks can be a good thing: when you take risks with healthy people, it can be a great thing! Awaken took this to heart and has been intentional about going on adventures with the women we serve. So far this year we have gone skydiving, camping in the Redwoods and rappelling! Each time these young women step out of their comfort zone it allows them to connect with us as well as with each other. In each of these adventures, they are faced with deciding whether or not they will take the risks to trust God, their environments, and the people around them.  We are so excited to develop a relational and exiting treatment model for these women and girls, and for them to develop healthy and strong relationships with each other, us and the Lord.

1st Annual Golf Fundraiser

Awaken_Golf_Main

Awaken is looking for individual (golfers) and community donors to participate in a Day-of-Golf Fundraiser at Somersett Golf & Country Club on Monday, June 8, 2015 to benefit the purchase of the first Safe House in Northern Nevada for survivors of commercial sexual exploitation.

The Day-of-Golf Pledge Event is no ordinary golf fundraiser! As an individual, you will need to raise the minimum suggested sponsor pledges of $2,000, or $20 per hole.

Each golfer is challenged to solicit pledges for each hole played. This collected $2,000 includes entry into all events, a marathon of golf at Somersett, riding cart, breakfast, lunch, dinner and marathon player incentives.

There will be an awards presentation, special speaker, and dinner directly after golf at the Sunset Grille formally known as 19th Hole.

Now you probably want to know more about the safe house, right? God has not just provided one house, but two! They stand on 20 acres of incredible land off the beaten path. The first house is 3500 sq. ft. and the second is 4000 sq. ft. The homes can house up to 6 girls each and all of this is included for only a purchase price of $250,000!!! As soon as God sends the resource we can move in! This is why the Day-of-Golf Fundraiser is so beneficial to Awaken. This fundraiser will help us to purchase this property and bring girls to a home of safety and restoration!

Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Reno

Jan 11th is Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Awaken and Junior League hosted an event to bring awareness to sex trafficking in Nevada. The city of Reno gave permission to turn off the lights of the Reno Arch to symbolize the darkness that human trafficking has brought into our state.

Local artists had artwork they created to shed light on the issue of commercial sexual exploitation. Leah Albright-Byrd, founder of Bridget’s Dream spoke and our musical guest was Whitney Myer, former contestant from the Voice! Community leaders addressed sex trafficking and highlighted an upcoming proposed state bill.

The Reno Arch was re-lit, as we stood as a community united to end sex trafficking.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
